Mom-trepreneurs Get KiDSavvy™

When Laura Wilker, a PR executive, and her friend Betsy Cadel, a freelance copywriter, got together, their conversations always involved two things: Questions about what to do and where to go with their young sons and why there wasn’t some sort of book to help them answer those questions.

One day over a lunch of “Where should I take Sam for this?” and “Is Simon too old for that?” they decided, “We have to write a book.” For the next year they researched the ins and outs of all the things that make Westchester such a desirable place to raise families. “We wanted to provide comprehensive, helpful information all in one place,” said Laura. “We knew from personal experience that the last thing a mom has is extra time to play detective, and we really wanted to be a trusted resource.”

They gathered information, articles, magazines, flyers, and the recommendations of fellow moms—and KiDSavvy™ Westchester was born. Now in its second edition, it is a compilation of over 1000 detailed listings covering newborns to ‘tweens – ranging from every park, playground, and indoor play space to kids’ classes like music, gym, art, foreign language, dance and enrichment.  KiDSavvy’s second edition includes additional topics that parents will appreciate – such as pregnancy resources, finding the right preschool, ways to donate and sell the things your kids have outgrown, day-trip and weekend getaway ideas, and how to choose a summer camp.  In addition, many sections—including classes, activities, and shopping—have been expanded to include listings for older kids. And, KiDSavvy still includes comprehensive listings of museums, children’s theater, family excursions, shopping, services, invaluable websites, and advice on everything from throwing birthday bashes to hiring a nanny.

“I love to give my two cents,” said Betsy. “So we included pieces of advice called ‘Savvy Suggestions’ that can be anything from where to donate your used cell phone to how to make apple crisp after you’ve visited one of the area orchards. We also have ‘Savvy Savings’ with money –saving ideas and ‘Savvy Superlatives’ that list our personal favorites.”

“What I love about KiDSavvy™ is that it includes addresses, phone numbers, and Websites, as well as cost, hours, and age-appropriateness. Right there, you’ve saved me about half an hour,” said Randi Volk of Yorktown Heights. “I always find something new I want to try in KiDSavvy™.”

KiDSavvy encompasses Northern and Southern Westchester, as well as some listings in nearby areas of Connecticut and Manhattan and Rockland and Putnam counties.

To use the obvious motherhood pun, KiDSavvy™ Westchester is really Laura and Betsy’s baby. They researched, wrote, published, and promoted it by themselves. “We were lucky to find a great editor, and some great designers to work with. We wanted to produce a truly professional book, and we were determined it would be something that we’d want to read,’’ said Laura. Betsy adds, “Between my background in advertising and Laura’s background in PR, we were confident that we could do this ourselves.”

Priced at $19.95, this book is a must-have for every parent (or parent-to-be) in Westchester. It is available throughout Westchester, at local bookstores and businesses, as well as through speaking engagements and on this Website.

Praise for KiDSavvy™ Westchester

“I want to thank you for writing such a comprehensive reference guide. I just wish I had it 3½ years ago when my son was born. It would have saved me from doing quite a bit of research. You have quite a few good suggestions in the book. I'm also glad that you included the playground listings; we're always looking for someplace new to play. Thanks again for the great guide! I look forward to future editions.”

—Lucy, Hartsdale

“Thank you profusely for the wonderful job you have done with your book. My wife and I have both read your book. As new parents in a new town, we greatly appreciate the guidance and suggestions that your book provides. I’m sure it will become one of our dog-eared favorites – right up there with ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ – in no time.”

—Paul, Scarsdale

“I have been looking for a book just like this for 6 years now, since my son was born. I am so happy that someone has finally taken the time to put all the information in one easy–to–find place. I ordered 4 extra books to give as gifts to some of my friends who are expecting babies of their own or are new to the area.”

—Pam, South Salem

“I’m moving to Ossining from Manhattan, and I would love to buy a copy of your book!”

—Jennifer, Manhattan

“Thanks for your book. I love it. My daughter, Julia, age 4, also says, ‘Thanks.’”

—Paul, Greenburgh

“As a working mom, I am always struggling to find new places to take my 2 year old. Who has the time to research and review all the great places, deals, etc.? Luckily, you two did. Thanks.”
